-
- The ZyXEL U-1496* series modems cannot be upgraded to 28.8Kbps operation.
- There was an upgrade-by-replacement program, but it ended early last fall.
-
- Even if it were still in operation, I'd advise not taking it. Though they
- weren't saying it anywhere I found in a timely manner, ZyXEL apparently
- sees its Elite 2864 series modems (their main 28.8Kbps offering) as ISDN
- modems which also implement 28.8Kbps to ease the transition to ISDN. In
- particular, they eventually (after the end of the upgrade program)
- stated that these modems are not capable of being upgraded to the latest
- version of the V.34 standard (which allows yet-faster communications; up to
- 33.6Kbps on the very best-quality phone connections). This is especially
- obnoxious since ZyXEL had to have known about the improved V.34 standard
- long before they released the 2864 series; I (and, I expect, many other
- people who participated in the upgrade program) feel that we've been ripped
- off.
-
- Don't get me wrong. I've been very happy with my U1496E, and don't see
- anything wrong with ZyXEL's apparent desire to move to ISDN. What I am
- very unhappy about is that, until it was too late, they gave people
- interested in upgrading to V.34 no indication that the 2864 series would
- not be a top-of-the line V.34 modem.
